It sustained damage during the famous chicago fire (8 Oct 1871 to 10 Oct 1871) but was re-built. From internet research, it seems that William sold the land and house which is where he made quite a bit of money for back then. After his death, Margaret went after the current land owners (Wentworth and Woolworth) to prevent them from using the West side of The Briggs House (which was not damaged in the fire) from using the entrance/area as The Briggs House according to the "Chicago Daily Tribune", 11 Aug 1873 at chroniclingamerica.loc.gov
